Unusual Museums in London: Part II

30Jun

Continuing our series looking into the various quirky museums dotted around the capital, we’ve found some more of the nichest and most interesting museums around the city.

Soane’s by Candlelight

Soane’s is a historic house, museum and library of the distinguished 19th century architect Sir John Soane. His house has been left untouched since his passing almost 180 years ago, and now houses this vast collection.

On the first Tuesday of each month, the whole museum is lit by candlelight in its entirety and opened to the public. Tickets start on sale at 5.30pm on the Tuesday, and there is a lot of competition for them.

The Geffrye

The Geffrye Museum is a museum dedicated to the home, and has a large display of homes and living rooms from the 1600s through to the present day. The museum is also surrounded by a large number of periodic gardens, which can be enjoyed as well as part of a visit.

The Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising

This museum is well worth a visit if you are in the West London area. It plays host to a collection of over 12,000 everyday objects which have changed over time or disappeared entirely from our lives. Take a look at your favourite chocolate bars and cereals from over 80 years ago!

Colville Mews, Notting Hill, W11 2AR, £6.50

Horniman Museums & Gardens

A collection of Frederick John Horniman’s, this museum has a vast array of Victorian era anthropological, musical, and natural curiousities, such as an overstuffed Walrus. They also have a massive 16-acre garden which is perfect for a lunchtime picnic.

100 London Rd, SE23 3PQ, Free entry
The Viktor Wynd Museum of Natural Curiosities

This is probably not a museum you are typical used to. The Viktor Wynd Museum wanted to create a museum that did not try to select and curate certain things, but rather highlight everything that they have in their collection to allow you to be the judge of what you want to see and not see. They have a wide array of objects, from beautiful pieces of fine art to McDonald’s Happy Meal Toys – allowing you to see things in a very interesting context.

11 Mare Street, E8 4RP, £5 (incl. Cup of Tea)
